About
The Chill Writers offer support and encouragement, inspiration and feedback, for our community of writers. Our main goal is to provide a creative environment where writers can share their written work, project ideas, writing block struggles, and feel part of a larger literary community.
New Member Requests: Although we emphasize the 'chill' in our group name, we try being selective in accepting new members. Writing is a personal journey, so we look for members who are not only insightful, but also respectful of the work of others. We try adding committed writers to our vibrant and supportive community.
Meetings: Individual monthly meeting(s) are limited to seven or eight members, and each individual is given an opporitunity to discuss their written work or writing project. We avoid anything overly structured, critical, or technical, unless requested by the writer. A novice writer may only want to flush out project ideas, where another writer may ask for a harder critique as they prepare a manuscript for publication. Because of time restraints, each writer is given approx 20 minutes (depending on attendance) to share their work, ideas, etc. and receive feedback.
Locations: Meetings are hosted by our members in their private homes (purely voluntary) which offers a safe and more suitable environment for writing discussions. Our writing sessions are held in and around Boston. We always consider parking and public transportation before selecting a meeting venue.
(NOTE: Most of our members are located in Boston and the immediate surrounding area.)
Three main "rules" to maintain your membership:
1. If a member with a 'Yes' RSVP cannot attend, we ask he/she try changing their RSVP as early as possible (48 hours, at least) so another member has the oppotunity to fill the seat. Obviously, last minute cancellations cannot always be avoided as life takes priority over a writer's group. However, if this is a regular pattern, we may need to remove the member from the group. Also, don't simply not show up for a meeting without any notice. Please take the time to notify an organizer or the host member that you can't make the meeting. We'll worry if we don't know where you are!
2. Respect each others work, be positive, and don't ever copy, share, or post another member's work without the authors permission. Also, remember to focus on what the writer has requested for feedback. It may be okay to express a strong feeling, providing it's framed in a constructive way.
3. Staying active is key!. Even RSVPing "No" lets us know that you're truly an active member.
Thanks, and happy writing!
